Why I’m Not Excited About The Leaked S.C. Opinion
Even if the draft opinion is substantially the final one, the legal effect will be to throw the legality of abortion back to the states, not make it illegal. The most reliable estimates seem to indicate that the number of abortions per year will likely only drop about 12-15% as a result of a SCOTUS decision overturning Roe. For those babies, that’s a very significant, even life-changing number. But for the other 85-88% of aborted babies, they will still be just as dead.
I Was Told There Would Be Winning!
A vast majority of religious conservatives voted for Trump solely or primarily (or at least substantially) because they believed that he would put conservative judges on the Supreme Court, and that would make things all better. Conservative judges will fix what ails us, and that’s all that counts. Unfortunately, history has shown us time and time again that that voting strategy doesn’t work.
Qualified Immunity Is a Solution, Not the Problem
If we take away qualified immunity from already lawsuit-jittery cops, we will lose a whole lot more good cops and be left with a whole lot more power-hungry cops. The cure would exacerbate the disease.
